I've been craving fall. We headed to the mountains Saturday to enjoy cooler weather and the gorgeous aspens. We had an absolute blast. I miss some of the bright oranges and reds from up north but the topaz aspens against the clear blue sky were stunning. We look forward to more exploring in this new state that already feels like home.

The wildfire smoke has made the mountains less visible lately but we've got plenty to look at. Austin has the webcam on the construction that is going on in front of us and we keep talking about the possibility of an Amtrak trip sometime. The train is about two blocks away and you can see it in the photo.

We got some unpacking done this weekend and hung up some art. We're a little more motivated since Bruce and Peggy will be visiting this evening but there is still work to be done. Not surprisingly, the largest amount of overflow comes from spices, tea, books, and kitchen gear. It has been good to downsize, though, and we will probably never miss having to mow a lawn. Now back to work!Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03474339689636808151noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-154846142375236267.post-77809226607637284522015-08-22T10:22:00.002-06:002015-08-22T10:22:43.661-06:00We made it!We're in Denver. So much has happened, I haven't been able to blog until now. But check out our view.

Basically, I returned from Mexico August 1st and we headed out the 7th. Unfortunately, I woke up sick the day I flew home from Mexico and had some sort of mystery illness that resulted in me feeling rather uncomfortable while packing, loading, and driving for two days. I drove my car and Austin and Stinky were in a huge Penske truck and we arrived in Denver on Saturday, August 8th. The movers unloaded the truck on the 9th and Austin was back to work early the next morning. I had campus meetings and was busy writing syllabi and planning new classes. But we made it and looking out at the city and the mountains every day has been so very delightful.

We are now in our second week here and still not fully unpacked. The apartment building is great but brand new so there have been some minor flukes, like our air conditioning intermittently going out which remains unresolved (the problem seems to lie in the Nest thermostat, unfortunately). The fire alarm was tripped in the middle of the night and we've seen firetrucks here on occasion as they try to figure out what is wrong. There is a truck parked out front as I type, as a matter of fact. There have been blips like that but we are incredibly happy with the location. We can literally take the elevator down to the grocery store (and it has a burrito stand! and a sushi train!), the bank, and Starbucks. A restaurant is also being constructed and we're waiting to see what it is. I walk to take light rail to work. Austin goes to the lobby frequently to get coffee from the fancy coffee machine they have. We're very close to Union Station and the 16th Street Mall so there's plenty to explore.

Longer term, we look forward to some weekends away in CO and beyond. It's early, but we feel like we've found a place that suits us well and we look forward to sharing it with family and friends as the opportunities arise.Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03474339689636808151noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-154846142375236267.post-34700390819630738662015-07-25T12:33:00.001-06:002015-07-25T12:33:56.374-06:00PhotosI'm trying to get some photos organized. I have long seen posters of a collection of doors from a given city or country but they really are cool compared to much of what I see in the U.S. I walk past this yellow one every day and there is something about it that makes me what to know who lives there, what it looks like inside, and more. If I ever write fiction about Mexico, this entryway will be included.

And these are just a few I saw as I walked to dinner tonight. The last house had a beautiful, spacious interior that I could just see through the one open pane and I peered in as closely as I could for a second.

I attempted to thank the very French chef but he was rather busy making an elaborate cake. I enjoyed a tomato and goat cheese quiche and took home a Nutella croissant which was a delicious treat.

Ana, aromatic on the kitchen room table. Down in the main house, Sr. Lalo was cooking a sauce that smelled amazing but I had to pass on their kind offer of a taste, setting off to meet up with a friend who leaves today. Later that evening, we attended the potluck for the second session of the potluck.

I taught my first class this morning and just as it has been the first two years, I think to myself "I can't believe I get paid for this." Every morning, I get ready while it is still a little dark then head out in the early light and walk down hill past colorful houses with curling wrought-iron balconies that are full of plants. I hit the main plaza and stop to get a tea* at OXXO, a convenience store (and new way to sign letters for my friends who also know OXXO) and head back up hill to the campus. The walk is through a series of tiny alleys (callejones) and steps built into the pathways. My U.S. brain wonders about folks who use wheelchairs or baby strollers and then I refocus because the guanajautenses have always gotten along just fine without my meddling, thank you very much. I continue up the stairs and through the gate into campus patio and up to the second floor where I teach. This summer, I have 17 high school teachers from the Northwest, the Midwest, California, and even the Bahamas. During class, we analyze language teaching, language learning, theories, practices, all the things that I enjoy. Two hours fly by quickly, at least for me.

After class, I'll either have an empanada from the campus stand and sit in the patio or I'll head to a favorite cafe or tea shop. My favorite cafe from last year has relocated into an old house and each room is unique. My favorite tea shop is smaller, with shelves of books all around to browse, trade for, or purchase. Their tea list is great, they have a nice lunch menu, and you can buy things to go like kilos of Mennonite cheese or soy burgers. At these cozy establishments, I grade any homework that has come in, re-read the articles for class, and prepare my lesson. Then I might go to lunch somewhere and the afternoon is dedicated to article revisions and preparing a conference presentation. That and some blogging and other social media including the old fashioned email.

In the evenings, I cook, go out, or get take-out. The menu options here are quite affordable and economical. I check email again, wifi permitting, do a little reading, watch the news in Spanish, shower, talk to Austin, and go to bed early.

*Getting a tea at OXXO means I didn't get the stove to cooperate to make my own in my lovely kitchen.Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03474339689636808151noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-154846142375236267.post-26614018681207688392015-06-27T14:12:00.001-06:002015-06-27T14:15:13.679-06:00Mission Accomplished

We have had several moves since then and have spent the past two years in Kentucky. I quickly realized my new position would keep me too busy to update regularly and so this blog sort of faded away. That has changed, however, as Austin and I pursue the next adventure and move to Denver, CO.

There will be much more to update about that, especially since we are headed there on Tuesday to look for housing, but for now, I'm glad to be able to return to writing semi-regularly updates about what we are doing, things big and small, and I appreciate that a few of you requested I restart the blog. My simple pleasure here is the amazing garden our neighbors have; it always makes me happy and I keep telling Austin I'm going to leave them a little thank you note to let them know how very much it brightens my day. I know I have often posted photos of flowers, food, cats, and cups of tea on here and there will be more of that to come. But maybe mountains now, too!Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03474339689636808151noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-154846142375236267.post-80170491689244869072014-07-19T16:25:00.001-06:002014-07-19T16:49:55.638-06:00One Week In

Between teaching and doing some consulting work, I've been keeping quite busy. One evening, while I was in my apartment, I heard some English and stepped out on my balcony. The next thing I knew, I had an invitation to a party at a nearby home that was being rented by a family from Texas. The home was incredibly beautiful and had stunning views. This photo is from the top terrace. We enjoyed quesadillas, chips with salsa and guacamole (made by the young daughter), and some tasty margaritas. My hosts also attended along with a mother and son from Seattle who were here studying Spanish. I wanted to stay longer but I teach early so I headed back to my little home before it was too late.
The master's students presented their thesis research last evening and this morning. Last night, three other professors and I went to a fantastic restaurant to determine the outcome of the presentations. We ordered a bottle of wine and tapas: a cheese board patatas bravas, shrimp in a creamy Pernod sauce, and tapenade. It was delicious and I may need to treat myself to dinner there before I leave.

Another student rented a large and beautiful home so she hosted a party to celebrate so we went to that after. It was amazing having wine on the rooftop terrace watching bolts of lightning crashing all around us. Eventually, it started to rain and we went inside. I ended up with my students at a salsa bar until 1:30. I behaved myself nicely and had a student from our program walk me home when everyone else went out for street tacos. We were up and at 'em for presentations at 9:00 this morning.

They have a great tea menu and at some point, I'll give there food a try too. They have a pig theme (hence the cookie next to my cuppa) and they have books all over for people to enjoy in the shop or borrow. All of my books are on my Kindle otherwise I'd be inclined to leave a book there. I had a little nap today, found a beautiful purse (I've been on the hunt for months), and did some strolling around. I found a little Asian joint by my apartment and I'll probably get takeout for dinner and curl up and read and go to bed early.Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03474339689636808151noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-154846142375236267.post-71006585266873397192014-07-16T17:59:00.000-06:002014-07-16T18:02:17.039-06:00Summer Class in Mexico

I’m sitting in quite possibly one of the most charming
kitchens in Mexico, waiting for the water to boil for my pasta. I’ve been here
three days and had a mental block about blogging because I had promised to blog
about Ecuador “soon” and that never ended up happening due to campus meetings
almost as soon as I got back, a challenging summer school class, and other
random things that came up. As much as I have to say about Ecuador, I want to
write about Guanajuato while I’m here.

I taught here last summer and it
went well but somehow, this summer is even better (with the exception of my
dear friend, Dr. SH, being on a well-deserved vacation instead of hanging out
with me in Gto). Though it may seem like a small detail, a big part of it is my
apartment. Last year I stayed in a fully remodeled apartment that an American
family owned. It was very nice but somewhat sterile and the caretaker was not terribly
pleasant. This apartment is attached to a family home that also has B&B
style guestrooms. It is filled with charm and art (and mosquitos, to be fair)
and the owners are lovely people. It’s a bit silly, but I think it’s super cool
that there is a pomegranate tree right outside my window. I have my own place
and I get a taste of family life and Mexican hosts to help me out. I ended up
asking the Señor for a corkscrew and toilet paper tonight.

I taught this same class last
summer so I have materials prepped and they only need minor modifications. My
walk to campus reminds me of my walk to class when I studied in Avignon. After
class, I either go to a coffee shop for a snack and tea or I work on campus
until I decide to leave for lunch. Today I went to lunch at a Japanese place.
It’s so small, there are just a few tables in an alleyway (callejón) and no
place to eat inside. Then I ran some errands. It seems every day there are
minor errands that are more fun here. It’s a challenge to find certain things
without taking a cab to a bigger store. My dinner is made up of pasta and
cheese purchased from a convenience store and vegetables and butter from a tiny
produce shop. I found a little wine at a random store that I had never seen
open before. It will be fun for the brief time I’m here and then I’ll go home
and enjoy some of the luxuries I have in my kitchen. Including a cooking
partner (Austin) and background noise (Stinky’s fussing).

We've been going non-stop since we got up on Monday morning after getting in quite late on Sunday. We are spending the first six days in Quito then heading out to smaller towns and villages where I will not have any internet access.

I really like Quito; it is no doubt its own city but it also reminds me of other Spanish-speaking areas I've visited which adds a sense of comfort. We are staying at a hotel but I'm in an apartment with three other women from other departments (geography, sociology, and nursing). We get up each day and go to the lobby for breakfast. There is a great sun room that I posted previously. Then we pile into a bus to head off to our next adventure where some of us gaze out the window to see the city and other professors... profess. A lot. It's quite the study on personalities!

Our tour of the city on Monday was fantastic. I loved it all but particularly enjoyed La iglesia de compañía de Jesus, a Jesuit church that was out of this world. It was designed in a mosque-like style with stunning Arabic patterns on all the walls. It is informally known as "The Gold Church" because almost anything that could be covered with gold leaf has been. Catholic altars line the walls and the front altar is incredible. The best part is that combination of Arabic, Spanish, and indigenous flavors. I hate to make comparisons but it's human nature--this church is to gold what Ste. Chappelle in Paris is to stained glass. It took my breath away.

Last night, a small group of us went out for authentic Ecuadorian food. I have already formed an addiction to aji, a salsa-like condiment, but last night I got the "real" food to put it on. The best were the llapingachos (photo later) which are like mashed potato cakes bowned on the bottom. Amazing. These are things I will attempt to recreate at home but I will need to find a way to acquire tree tomatoes, hmm....
Ok, we're off to lunch in a bit and then we'll be touring a campus hospital. Later tonight, I'm off to the contemporary art center for an artist talk, so excited!Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03474339689636808151noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-154846142375236267.post-49707614113424931892014-05-20T16:00:00.000-06:002014-05-20T16:01:19.969-06:00Campus Visit

We went to our sister campus today. I miss the mountain laurel and bluebonnets from Texas but spring in Kentucky is really lovely too. Here's a quick update of what's been going on here.

Stinky has been extra clingy since we've returned from Mexico. I guess we'll have to host Christmas because he's made it very clear we are never to leave him again.

The bulbs I planted are coming up and our grass is getting green. I'm looking forward to getting some herb containers going. We're also going to have to get a grill and some patio furniture. We thought those items would be on sale last fall but that was not the case.

I've been working at home since last Thursday because our building lost power. Like majorly so. It sounds like we'll be back in on Wednesday. I'm updating syllabi and creating online assignments because between this and the ice/snow days, things are a mess.

Austin is building a coffee table but progress has been slowed down by a bum foot.

We ate at Kulinarium, our favorite, twice. When we walked in, we were greeted in the lobby with a glass of bubbly rosé and then shown to our table. Here is a combined list of our two dinners there. I'm too lazy to crop and add filters to the photos so here they are, straight from my iPhone.

The Appetizers

These would more aptly be called "amuse-bouche" and were cheese tequeños (stuffed rolls) and shrimp and Peruvian potato puree.

The Starters

Puff pastry with roasted vegetables and caramelized foi gras with a balsamic reduction

"Seduction" of ceviches--Mexican-style shrimp, Nikkei-style tuna, and Peruvian-style sea bass. The tuna ceviche was amazing and we are going to try to recreate it.
